When this book opened with a very literary tone, I was skeptical about enjoying it. Generally speaking, I'm not a fan of literary fiction. I ended up enjoying it more than I expected!

Yes, it's definitely heavily literary, but it's also creative enough to add a level of interest and complexity that most literary fiction (in my biased opinion) tries to fake in its pretentious tone.

This book starts as a story about a loving but awkward couple, their monstrous wealth, and the way money and culture intermingle. It morphs into a revealing look at pride, self-justification, and the way wealth supports illusions of greatness. And finally shows the behind-the-scenes impact of women with great talent and culturally dismissed importance who nevertheless found a way to shape the world around them.

Very minimal need for content disclosure. Some direct but passing and non-graphic reference to marital intimacy. Can't remember, specifically, swearing but there may have been a few times.
