The Hollow Ones by Guillermo del Toro, Chuck Hogan
2.0

Being a huge fan of del Toro's The Strain, I thought I was going to be in for a fast-paced, action packed horror novel. The Hollow Ones started off right and ended up on a low simmer for the rest of the tale. It's definitely not horror. I'd barely classify it as a thriller. Plus the character development never played out. This story fell flat for me.

The story starts with a young FBI agent named Odessa who has been suspended for shooting her partner after witnessing him have some sort of breakdown during an investigation. She ends up on desk leave and is asked to clean up the office of an agent named Earl Solomon who is in the hospital. When she goes to visit him, he advises her to send a letter to Hugo Blackwood, an occult detective who might be able to help her figure out what happened with her partner's bizarre actions.
