I got this for my birthday and I am so glad because it's part of a bigger series with the same private investigator featuring and I now need to read them all! I really enjoyed this book and found it very hard to put down. Told mostly from the POV of a private investigator called Raker, it also jumps to other people's POV's and timelines, but never in a confusing way. Raker is called to investigate a very mysterious case. A mother and her two-year-old daughter were watching the rest of the family on a boat in a lake on Dartmoor. The mother briefly nodded off but her watch suggested it was only for a minute or two, and during that time the family vanish. Her husband Marc and son Kyle, and Kyle's girlfriend Clara are all gone without a trace. Meanwhile, Raker is called by an old flame and colleague about another strange case. This time a murderer has vanished from a locked cell. He sends his friend Healy to look at that one while he starts investigating the missing Fowler family case. However, it soon becomes apparent that the two cases are linked. A killer stabbed an extremely wealthy and powerful man to death and vanished, only to come back a week later and allow themselves to be arrested and held in a cell in the casino where the murder took place. The killer than vanishes from that cell. How that happened, why it happened, how the Fowler family vanished and how all of it is tied up together made this book a constant page-turner! It was so clever how Raker and Healy pieced it all together bit by bit and towards the end there were several very clever twists I didn't see coming. For me this was a very clever read by a very smart author and I am desperate to read more of his books!
