On the Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta
5.0
I think I've figured Melina Marchetta out. She likes to play mind games. It's almost like a trust exercise. If you trust that the story will come and you're patient and stick with her, she'll give you one of the greatest journeys. But you gotta trust her.
On the Jellicoe Road is such a slow reveal that, as my status updates reveal, for the first 1/4 of it I had no clue what was going on. As I was reading I was constantly thinking "I have no clue what's going on". But even as I was at my depths of confusion the writing was so compelling and well-paced that I didn't mind not knowing. I was in it for the ride.
And it paid off. Bit by bit the story is revealed to you, and boy was it a story. I loved the main character Taylor. She's great. I want to be friends with her. I love all the supporting characters. And the ship! I am down with the ship. 100%. I don't even know what to say. I have nothing to say. I can't articulate WHY this book worked for me. I mean apart from the excellent writing, the plot, the twists, the character development etc. It's just great.
