I didn't like this book quite as much as I liked its predecessor, but it's still very good. What both books have in common is an essential hopefulness and sense of adventure, which is a welcome antidote to the pessimism that pervades quite a lot of modern science fiction (as well as modern-day life in general). I can't wait to read the sequel.

Edit: On a reread, I bumped my score up from 4 to 4.5. The book really spoke to me this time and I love the characters too much to keep it any lower.
