Nestlings by Nat Cassidy
5.0
Nat Cassidy has done it again! This was creepy, atmospheric and a total gross out vampire story. Ana and Reid have brand new baby Charlie, but with new baby has come overwhelmed changes - health, financial struggles, etc. The 144 year old Deptford apartment building is everything a New Yorker would want…until it isn’t. Bugs, guts, gore, slime and otherworldly creatures make this a perfect Halloween season read. I love Cassidy’s writing, his story building is superb. I read this in a handful of days - fast moving plot and descriptive writing makes the scenes easy to envision. Would make a great movie adaptation. Cassidy’s epilogue helps provide context to what he was experiencing when he was writing this: lots of family death, unfortunate job changes, his wife’s health issues and just down right awful 2020 pandemic hell, but he does a great job capturing the transitional phase of grief and explores motherhood in a dark, but still nurturing sense. If you are into creepy, horror reads - this was a big YES!
