Season of Life: A Football Star, a Boy, a Journey to Manhood by Jeffrey Marx

4.0

Think "Double Goal Coach" with more of a personal story behind it. The book is about the deeper gifts of a team sport than just winning, and the importance of focusing on those gifts versus coaching with and ends justify the means type of mindset. Mr. Marx, weaves his own life into this tale about a former Baltimore Colt turned preacher and football coach that focuses on the life lessons of team sports. The coach, Joe Ehrmann, coined the phrase, Men Built for Others, and built up a whole community program around it in Baltimore. Mr. Ehrmann also takes the idea of Men Built for Others and applies it to the football team he helps coach, with some outstanding results, both on and off the field. Mr. Marx is a journalist and like most journalists turned author, the style of writing grates on me, so the lack of a fifth star is really due to a personal hangup. However, if you want to read a good Remember the Titans/Radio/Mystery, Alaska story then this is the book for you. Highly recommend it.
