To Catch a Firefly by Emmy Sanders

I was ten years old when I met Lucky. I knew it then, and I know it now. He’s a firefly. Luminous and wild. He was never meant to be trapped. Not here and not with me. And in a few days, I’ll finally watch him fly away.

This is the absolutely stunning story of Ellis, an autistic man with selective mutism, and his best friend Lucky, a full-of-life travel photographer. They have been best friends since they were 10, and this book spans their life together as children, teens, and then adults. Ellis is quiet and contemplative while Lucky is outgoing and beautiful. Lucky knows Ellis better than anyone, and he knows exactly what Ellis is saying without Ellis having to speak, while Ellis wants only one thing in life - for Lucky to be happy.

“I’m going to call. And you’re going to talk to me.”
It sounds like a threat. “Yes,” I say.
“And sometimes, we’ll email.”
I nod.
“But we’re not done,” he says vehemently, stepping into my space. “We’ll never be done. Me and you, we don’t have an ending.”

As a mom of a child with selective mutism, I appreciated the representation. Like autism, there is a spectrum of selective mutism, and Ellis is on the more severe end of the spectrum. It was heartwarming to see sm represented in a beautiful and moving way.

With the moon lending its soft glow through the window, Lucky falls asleep. And I learn what it is to cradle a firefly in my palms.
