An Heir Comes to Rise
by Chloe C. Peñaranda
3.5 Stars
I liked this! I was unsure about diving into another one of Peñaranda's books after giving The Stars are Dying a go and being really put off by the prose, but I think that An Heir Comes to Rise demonstrates her ability to write an engaging, interesting novel without leaning on flowery, over the top writing. (A preference, I know)
I really enjoyed this novel - I think the characters were phenomenal and I think the depiction of friendship was really satisfying and wonderful. It is genuinely so important to me that the YA genre leans into the beauty and importance of evolving, complex, rich friendship. The plot was a bit on the simpler side but was still thoroughly enjoyable.
I'd also like to note, as someone who (again) was NOT a fan of my first read from this author and who believes in the value of critical reviews, I think accusations that this book is a direct rip off of TOG are unfair. I do see common themes and a specific motif was probably striking to many (and maybe some things will be more glaring as the series unfolds, I have no oracular abilities), but where I stand right now is that an Heir Comes to Rise stands tall on its own. Had it felt redundant to keep listening to this story, I would have stopped.
