I got this book as an ARC ebook from NetGalley.
With so many great reviews, I thought I'd love this book. Sadly, I disliked it so much I abandoned it 30% in.
It's SO BORING. The story is just so slow and drags so much. The fourth chapter is about getting water...that's basically it. Other things happen, but it's just so lame. She's had to pee since chapter one and it took her four chapters to finally go. That is ridiculous, not important and not funny. The writing is done well, but the story doesn't show the art of the writer's prose. This book was supposed to be insanely humorous; I didn't find anything really funny at all. The attempt at being humorous is there, but severely lacking. Personality traits can only be funny the first couple of times, but they are relied on too heavily in this book. There should be more than the personality when it comes to humor. This is just a huge miss.
The characters are awful. Their traits, meant to be funny, were really annoying. One lady is like a complete racist, but everything she says is supposed to be taken as a funny joke. The boyfriend, awful. The boss, irritating. Even the main character, Verdell, is annoying. At first, I really liked her because of her sarcasm and wit but as it went on...she really offered nothing else and it got REALLY old. All the characters were absolutely unlikable by the second chapter. Plus, the mix of characters just seems so odd. I know that given the scenario you would most likely be with people that were very different. But this is just not a working mix. Combined, hilarity should ensue...but sadly, they are just very negative and unfunny.
The chapters are marked to explain what is going to happen in each chapter. I.e., getting water. That thing may happen within the given chapter but I felt that the story just kind of scattered and didn't really flow well. Overall, there was just a really confusing feel about this book and it didn't' work for me.
I just really didn't enjoy this book. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone personally, but use your best judgement. If you like apoca-lit, you may like it. I just didn't like anything about.
