Fated Blades by Ilona Andrews

5.0

I knew I enjoyed Ilona Andrews' writing after ravenously reading the entire Kate Daniels series earlier this year, and I'm so glad that my enjoyment translates to something entirely different from them.

Fated Blades is a perfectly short and sweet romance between two incredibly intense, deadly, and competent heads of enemy families. Betrayal forces Ramona and Matias to work together, and because this is a romance, of course they connect. They do fall in love very quickly with the assistance of a sci-fi version of being mated, but there was enough insight into both of them as people and how they viewed one another that I totally believed they could fall for each other.

The world building here is pretty neat for the short amount of time the Andrews had with this page count, but they absolutely made it work. The technology of their blades feeling almost like fantasy magic, the set up of their families and culture, the set up of their planet's place in their planetary system, the politics of it all - it just worked for me.

This was totally the palate cleanser I needed right now.
