The Hundred and Ninety-Nine Steps
by Michel Faber
This is a very short book - I read it in a couple of hours. It is also possibly the worst book I’ve ever read. If you’re looking for evidence of male authors writing women characters poorly this is your book. Countless times I had to stop and reread the truly awful descriptions of the thoughts and behaviour of the central character Siân to check that I hadn’t misread something. Dismal.
