Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder by Joanne Fluke

3.0

I first want to start off this review by saying .. if you are getting into this book/series thinking it's going to be some Game of Thrones level writing or plot then maybe this isn't the series for you. Literally saw a whole NOVEL of a review written by someone who obviously didn't get the point of this at all ... even criticising the FICTIONAL cookies being made. c'mon, really?

Anyway, I've been getting more into this whole 'cozy mystery' sub-genre lately (and yes, I am someone who also reads those more serious/"game of thrones level books" so don't come for me) and I honestly did enjoy this first entry in this series! I will say it did drag a bit after we get the set-up of someone in town being murdered and only really picked up again when **SPOILER** another body is discovered **END SPOILER** but I can't say the overall journey bored me in anyway and no, the killer wasn't a huge surprise, but I also can't say I wasn't guessing right up to the last minute who it could be among the few townsfolk around so it was fun to finally found out who the culprit was. The end of the book also nicely sets up what's to come and seems to nicely lay out some potential plot threads that will (hopefully) be woven throughout the rest of these books. But however it's done, I'm excited and have a lot of catching up to do! I definitely recommend reading this if you enjoy murder mysteries but also don't want anything too "scary" or "gorey". Yes there is murder (which is in no way cozy) but there are cats and cookies (with recipes!) and silly family drama, some romance, and a very relatable protagonist (especially if you are a woman in your late 20s-early 30s or so?).

If you are hesitant to read this definitely just pick it up at your local library! I am starting the short novella in the back of this edition I got of Chocolate Chip Cookie Murder and am excited to see how it is.
