The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid

5.0

5/5: ‘The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo’ is an Adult-based, Historical-Contemporary by Taylor Jenkins Reid; Monique Grant, an unknown journalist at the prestigious Vivant, is selected by 1960s Hollywood movie icon Evelyn Hugo, to write a biography of Evelyn’s glamourous and scandalous history – potentially jumpstarting Monique’s career. Reid constructs a mesmerising journey through old-time Hollywood, from the staggering highs and the sickening lows, it is a masterpiece. The combination of historical fiction and contemporary intertwined with elemental-flashbacks were immensely thought-out. Reid’s prose was vividly beautiful, each chapter remained unique and descriptive. Evelyn Hugo as a literary character was a pleasure to indulge in; the in-depth look into Cuban heritage, and Bisexuality during the given era presented such hardship. Evelyn is a formidable character; strong-willed, compassionate, and cunning; though, also selfish, unthoughtful, and despicable – a love-hate relationship. The subtle mystery entwined is taut and sophisticated, carrying the plot full-circle to present times. Opening eyes to the harsh realities of life. The novel touches upon themes of LGBT+, Race, Misogyny, and conforming to Social Norms; reiterating that life is too short, live in the moment and love people whom deserve love you. Reid epitomises the value of honesty and the beauty of love in all shapes and forms; the voice carries messages straight to the heart of the reader. As the first introduction into adult-fiction, ‘The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo’ is the greatest novel; an outstanding story that I highly recommend to all – unbelievable.
