It’s been a long time since I’ve read a book that had me turning pages late into the night and thinking about getting back to reading whenever I was doing anything else. The characters were strong and lovable with beautiful relationships, and the plotting was smart and fast-paced. The writing was perfect for the book in the sense that it was good, but not flowery, allowing it to fade into the background and let the story shine without taking you out of it to reflect on beautiful language or the skill of the writer. I really enjoyed the touch of romance and the way that the characters’ fictional lives were used to weave together so many real events of WWII. A fantastic read from start to finish. I borrowed it from the library, but I’ll be buying a copy to add to my own bookshelves.
