The Witcher Omnibus by Paul Tobin

5.0

SOOO this up here at the top is my rating for the omnibus over all and below I'll talk about each of the short stories in brief. But MAN this was refreshing after the 60000 Romantasy books I've been reading lately. It was bloody, it was gross, it was sad, it was wonderful.

☆ Fun Factor 5/5
☆ Writing Style 5/5
☆ Characters 5/5
☆ Plot 5/5
☆ Setting 5/5
☆ Feels 3/5
☆ Spiciness 4/5 There's a lot of naked ladies (and naked lady monsters)

Ultimate verdict ☆☆☆☆/5

☆☆☆Best Character Award goes to:☆☆☆ C'mon you know I gotta give it to Geralt

OK SO

on to the individual short stories.

HOUSE OF GLASS ☆☆☆☆☆/5

House of Glass is the best story included in the omnibus; it has beautiful art, a rich and tragic story, ghosts, monsters, a haunted house, Geralt's characterization is spot on and the side characters are all memorable. House of Glass is very in keeping with [a:Andrzej Sapkowski|38569|Andrzej Sapkowski|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1241014902p2/38569.jpg]'s writing style. There's a lot of ambiguity and unanswered questions about the key points in the story and that's what really makes it stay with you. This is Geralt doing Witcher stuff at his best.

FOX CHILDREN ☆☆☆☆☆/5

Fox Children is a ghost ship situation rather than a haunted house story, and as often happens in other Witcher tales, it's about women wronged by men (also true for House of Glass btw). The art is just as good as House of Glass; when I read it as a standalone years ago, I said of the art style that I wanted some of these panels as prints. That's still true today. Like with House of Glass, the writer really GETS Geralt and how he works and understands the tone of the books really well. (I am a Witcher book purist, not the games but anyways). It's well written and tense, action packed and full of all sorts of surprises.

KILLING MONSTERS ☆☆/5

The weakest one for me, Killing Monsters doesn't really "do it" for me and I can't really put my finger on why. The art style is my best guess, it's just not to my tastes at all. The story is simplistic, and Vesemir's just kinda...here because hey remember him?

CURSE OF CROWS ☆☆☆☆/5

Geralt and Ciri off on grand adventures after the seemingly now canon Ciri is a Witcher ending to the Witcher 3 game, they're on their way to Novigrad and pick up a bunch of Witcher contracts on the path. This one relies heavily on knowledge of the story called The Witcher from the first Witcher book, [b:The Last Wish|40603587|The Last Wish (The Witcher, #0.5)|Andrzej Sapkowski|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1529591917l/40603587._SX50_.jpg|2293675], in which Geralt faces a striga created by any number of options. Was it Foltest's incest with his sister? Ostrit's jealous unrequited love for Adda? The original book never gave an answer, but the comic picks one in particular. Now in the current time line, Ciri's determined to face a striga of her own, but things aren't what they seem.

Unlike House of Glass or Fox Children, this one is more in line with the games's characterization of Geralt, Ciri, and Yen than the books since this is a sort of in between chapter of the end of Witcher 3 and the beginning of the now confirmed Witcher 4 with Ciri as the lead. I wouldn't be totally surprised if this isn't referenced in the new game.

CONCLUSION

all in all this is a great omnibus, the first of three that I know of and I hope they continue to make more Witcher comics. More Witcher is always good gimme gimme gimme.
