sc104906 's review for:
Verona Comics
by Jennifer Dugan
I received this as an eARC from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.
Two households, both alike in dignity, In fair Verona, where we lay our scene. One comic shop monolith and one indie shop, two teens and a budding love.
Jubilee is a talented cello player with an important audition coming up. She was told that she needs to live more to make her music better. While at a con with her moms, she attends a prom dressed as her favorite peacock character (out of her step mom's wildly popular comic). However, Jubilee spends little time at the prom, instead she spends it outside with a masked Batman, who is having a panic attack. The two hit it off and continue texting even after the con. Jubilee doesn't realize that Bats is Ridley, the son of her family's arch nemesis comic shop owner. Ridley's family is a train wreck and he hopes to get back into his father's good graces by spying on Jubilee's family and getting intel to use against them. The lies start to stack up and Ridley is falling hard for Jubilee, he is going to make a decision about where his loyalties lay.
I enjoyed this novel. I liked the characters and loved the romance between the two. I loved the flirty texts and interactions. I think that these characters are trying to do what is right with what they have in front of them and I appreciate that. I think the fact that both main characters are bisexual and the discussion of what that means related to their identity was strong and an important aspect. I think that there was a brief tone shift near the end that didn't completely flow, but I think the ending was more realistic than I see in many books.
