The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix

3.25

Housewife (n)- a light, worthless woman or girl- Oxford English Dictionary, compact edition, 1971

Something I really appreciate about Grady Hendrix is how he writes female characters and the way he addresses issues surrounding patriarchy and the treatment of women in society. Particularly in this book I appreciated the themes surrounding white privilege and the class divide between the housewives and those in six mile.

That being said, I didn’t enjoy this book as much as the other Grady Hendrix books I have read. I understand the need for the reader to feel frustrated at nobody believing Patricia and showcasing how this main antagonist could get away with his evil acts for so long because nobody believed her. However it did get to the point where I stopped enjoying reading the book because it was dragging. There were parts I enjoyed (not in a feel good way for obvious reasons but I was gripped by the story) but they were matched by the parts that I wanted to skip through.
