Commander in Chief by Katy Evans

2.0

While Mr President, book 1 in this series, wasn't the greatest book, I still found it quite enjoyable to read. Commander in Chief, however, was a bit of a disappointment. It took me awhile to think and realize why this was the case, but I finally figured it out.

This book makes everything, including being President of the United States (!), way too easy.

The big draw from book 1 was the tension between Matt and Charlotte, as well as the stakes of the campaign. Even though you ultimately knew that Matt was going to win the election, it felt like he and his team really had to work for it. But in this book, despite having a great bit of dialogue where Matt explains how becoming President and learning confidential information can derail campaign promises, seems to magically be able to do everything he wants to. There is very little struggle and when it does happen, it feels forced a lot of the time.

Even the sex became easy and I found myself skipping scenes because I just wasn't into it anymore. And later in the book, the time jumps just heighten the feeling that this everything Matt and Charlotte touch just works out perfectly and it all just became a bit dull.

There were a few good things in this book - more POV from Matt was interesting, though I found him becoming a less compelling character due to the plot issues. And I did like that scene I mentioned before, focused on why some election promises die the day you're sworn in. But ultimately these don't pay off and, given that the previous book ended on a cliffhanger, I really can't recommend reading this series.
