Alive by Scott Sigler
3.0

A young woman awakes in the dark, with no idea where she is or how she got there. After fighting her way free of the "coffin" she awakes in, she finds others in the same situation. How did they get there? Will they be able to find food and water, and, more importantly, a way to escape?

That's the premise of the book that is described in a blurb on the back as "a cross between Lord of the Flies and The Maze Runner, and yet so much more."

You can tell that Sigler started his career by releasing a chapter at a time of his books as podcasts, because each short, punchy chapter ends with a bit of a cliff-hanger. It's definitely a device that keeps you reading and wanting to find out more. On the downside, he's recycling a lot of well-worn tropes from speculative fiction, and I saw a few "plot twists" coming from a mile away. And, he does that thing in a few places where you can obviously tell that it's a male author writing from the viewpoint of a young woman (see the "Men Write Women" Twitter feed for examples of what I mean).

My overall feeling was that this was a fun, easy read, but I'm not sure I'm invested enough to finish the trilogy. If you're looking for great literature, skip this one. If you want a little brain candy that will keep you turning the pages to find out what comes next, this might be up your alley!
