The Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas by Machado de Assis

3.0

3.5 stars

I did myself a great disservice by reading this book the way that I read it i.e. over the course of six weeks with many, many breaks. Definitely would’ve enjoyed it more if I kept up my pace but despite that, I really loved this book.

First published in 1881 by a Brazilian author, the book is unique in its structure and way ahead of its time. It’s about a gentleman, Dr. Brás Cubas, who is writing his memoirs from his grave, after his death. He talks about his conquests and failures, in a sarcastic fashion, all the while insulting the reader along the way. The playfulness of the style was definitely engaging, but I think I need to brush up on my Brazilian history before rereading this book because a lot of historical references were lost on me.
