Scarlet by A.C. Gaughen
4.0

3.5 stars :)
[I'm really sorry, because my reviews are crap. I'm just forcing myself to put my thoughts down more often ;)]
In some ways this was so average, so typical and so YA and so debut. And in other ways it wasn't! It even surprised me and made me laugh.
If you're expecting a good, exciting Robin Hood story, you'll probably be disappointed. This is a book about Scarlet, a YA heroine. 'Robin Hood' is the setting. That's how it felt like for me.
What I didn't like:
- quite repetitive (Scar has a plan. Everyone: this is a bad idea. Scar: is stubborn / Everyone wants to protect Scar always. Scar: is mad at everyone / Something happens. Scar: runs away [okay, I can relate] / Scar in every situation: blushes.)
- most obvious, boring love story with the most obvious twist (really, if you create characters and everyone [=reader] knows where they are coming from and where they are going [except for the characters themselves obviously, who are stubborn fools in love] it's just annoying and why are you even telling the story, everyone knows the end already? I'm not saying it's not realistic [it is, sadly], it's just not very exciting.)
What I liked:
- John :D He was unexpected. Sometimes I liked him, sometimes I wanted to slap him. Grrhhaaaarg. I didn't know where the story was going with him. I thought I would hate him as a YA character (so far I've seen him as a big brother or even father figure?), but he turned out to be my favourite part.
- Much.
- Scarlet. At least sometimes.
I mean...
Guy friend (not love interest No.1 [Noooo!!!]) kisses Scar out of the blue.
YA heroine: freaks out (either furious or shy or swooning [scandalous!])
Scar: I don't understand, but whatever, let's be polite. "Thanks for the kiss."

In the end I just have a soft spot for everything Robin Hood and for girls dressed as boys (it wasn't too unrealistic here, since most people knew, especially those close to her).
