Aurora Burning
by Jay Kristoff, Amie Kaufman
Once again, this duo has delivered to me everything I wanted. I don’t know why I was so nervous!
Sometimes the only way to win is to break the game.
I still love the cheesiness in this series - the off-the-cuff banter and teasing between crew-mates even in tense situations. It’s something that I think makes or breaks people’s enjoyment of this, but I love it. It’s definitely a YA Space Opera and I adore it!
Learning more about the Eshvaren and the Ra’haam is one of the elements that keeps me super engaged in the plot as well as the characters. The mystery is still not fully fleshed out but I find myself wary when it seems some things are still hidden.
I’m also incredibly satisfied with the way details of each character are delivered as the story progresses. I find myself liking all of these characters more and more! Zila’s backstory in particular was heart wrenching and so is Kal’s. I also am incredibly happy that Kaufman & Kristoff have worked to increase the LGBT+ diversity of this series, which was one minor element I noticed lacking in the Illuminae Files.
There is no shortage of angst where these two authors are involved and the ending has left me nervous for this crew. As the situation becomes far less black and white, I wonder how in the Fold this is all going to resolve itself! I look forward to the next book, absolutely.
