Wow! One of the best books I have read in quite a while. Supposedly it tells the story of a somewhat covert race to break the speed record for going down the Colorado river through the Grand Canyon, but it is SO MUCH more than that. A history lesson, a geological discussion, a meteorological explanation, a dialogue on the physics of fluid flows and a philosophical exegesis on the importance of the natural world all rolled into one. And Mr. Fedarko is able to wrap it all up in a compelling story that keeps you reading long after you should have gone to bed. I highly recommend giving this book a test ride.
