This is a non-fiction review of U.S. politics beginning after JFK's assassination in 1963. The author's viewpoint is that 1964 was a seminal year in the U.S. and somewhat the world, and it began in late 1963 through early 1965. The book focuses primarily on Lyndon Johnson's presidency, his good work on civil rights and furthering the governmental support system created by Franklin Delano Roosevelt. In addition, the book discusses LBJ's 'downfall' through his buy-in to continue and significantly expand the American war in Vietnam.
It is a very good book, written with many cultural examples to show the changes in America during that extended 1964 period... music, movies, etc. I believe the civil rights evidence using the organizations of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) and CORE are particularly focused and true to the moment. Significant time is spent discussing the Freedom Schools in the Summer of 1964 and the main participants.
The author stresses that the meaningful churn that happened during the long-1964 moment in fact can be identified as creating today's divided country. Sides were drawn and the Republican Party elected to turn its back on the future and focus on a mythology of the past.
