Wonder Woman: Warbringer
by Leigh Bardugo
It got easy to read after they got to New York, but I didn't have any emotional connection to Diana before that. It set the tone for the information we got from the brother, but it was so detached to read. It was another spin on a story that's been told so many times, and I was hoping there was a new twist like the Batman one had and like the Cinder series. Also, the relationship between the brother and Diana was so forced.
Scenes like the one before the gala, where Alia had to pick a dress and picked a non-black one, rubbed me the wrong way--like the book is more of a coming of age, high school kid story--but maybe that was the intention. It was awkward, just like it is in the movies, and the hooks that I give 5 stars to don't have awkwardness.
The use of gods was very interesting and it gave more depth and uniqueness to a previously bland and overtold/archtype filled story. I loved when Nim started turning into a scary winged goddess.
There were still some cringy weird ass parts in this book that made me tired and bored, but after Jason turned bad, there was not a single bad sentence written. Or paragraph. Or there were good sentences. Or something.
I feel like I liked Sara J Maas books, specifically the Throne of Glass series and specifically not the other one, but I think this is one of those things. Like when an actor is bad but can act ONE CHARACTER extremely well. I was excited about this book because I loved the Batman one from this series, but honestly I was a little very much a lot disappointed.
After 85% I was happy. Before I was dying and crying and throwing up and wanted to finish sooooo bad. That's why she gets a 3. Sorry my queen.
