schroederius 's review for:
I am an atheist. Have been for my entire adult life. But I've read John Pavlovitz writings online, and agreed with just about everything he said, so I decided to read this book. And I found that I agree with just about everything he says in this book too. Except the belief-in-God part. Which, really, doesn't even matter that much to John, he says so in this book itself. He identifies all the things that I object to in organized religions in America today, and he has the same reactions I do. I could enumerate these things, but John states them much more eloquently than I could. I recommend this book to atheists like me, who I suspect will see that a lot of what they find objectionable isn't really inherent to Christianity, it's just how Christianity is practiced. I recommend this book to believers, and I wonder, if they read it, will it change their worldview? Because isn't that, at heart, what we're hoping for in life? Things that help us see the world in a different and better way? Or, at least more accurately? Suffice it to say, if there were a church where no one pretended prayers could influence/bribe an all-powerful Creator, where people weren't told they had to behave or else they would be sent to neverending anguish, where people just sought ways to build a community based on love and kindness, I wouldn't have to believe in religion to join that sort of community. I give this excellent book five stars. Read it!
