We Are Not Like Them by Christine Pride, Jo Piazza

4.0

this book has been sitting on my shelves for over a year. i can’t believe i have let it sit there unread for so long. i read this book in less than 24 hours. i loved the dual author and respective povs. it made the characters have distinct voices and added another layer to the book.

it was interesting to watch these two characters navigate this impossible situation and see the imperfections of their friendship reveal themselves. i wish that we got to see riley and jen’s unbreakable bond more than just be told about it. we are introduced to these characters as they have already drifted apart quite a bit. so it is more the authors telling us that these characters were such good friends rather than actually seeing that.

while i get that jen is living through a personally hard time, her husband did help kill a child… and she seemed to be selfish and did not understand the impacts and systematic issues taking place (even at the end of the book). i wish we got a bit more character growth and understanding from her than we got. still a fairly high rating from me as it did captivate my attention and despite the long chapters, it was able to keep me reading for long periods. i think the topic and plot are very important but i think the authors could have just done a bit more with it!
