have I finally conquered my big book fear???
I was completely enthralled by the small town of Middlemarch and its various inhabitants for the entire book. that is so rare in general, but even more impressive for a nearly 900 page Victorian behemoth!
big shoutout to my taste twin emmareadstoomuch and new favorite author Yaa Gyasi for loving this book and convincing me to read it.
I’ve always struggled a bit with Victorian novels (mostly because they were all originally serialized and thus quite long), but George Eliot managed to use her words to explore a handful of characters in depth. All the chapters advance the plot and there is surprisingly little filler, given the 880 page length.
I also thought the writing style was pretty approachable and easy to follow (for 19th century lit) and the only thing preventing it from being more approachable to more people is the length. So give it a shot - you hopefully won’t regret it!
