Roots: The Saga of an American Family
by Alex Haley
An amazing journey through the generations of Alex Haley's family, starting in a small African village in the 1700s.
The writing is a little generic, especially in the early portion in the village, where I would have liked to have seen more dialogue and specific scenes rather than the "generally what would happen in the village at this time was..."
I thought Haley really started to find his voice in the Atlantic passage section of the book, and from there on, it soars. The couple of closing chapters about how he researched for the book are absolutely fascinating.
