Where the Lost Wander by Amy Harmon

5.0

John Lowry has never felt comfortable. Not with the Pawnee, his mother's people, nor with his father's family in St. Joseph, Missouri. But no one has made him feel more out of sorts than Naomi May. Traveling with her family to California on the wagon train John is helping lead, she has had a disconcerting effect on him from their first meeting. As they begin their journey west, Naomi makes no secret of her interest. John is hesitant to return her affection, much as he wants to. But the road before them is harder than either one of them can imagine.

This may be one of my favorite Amy Harmon books. I loved everything about Naomi - her individuality, her determination, her boldness, and the way she knew her own mind and expressed it. John was also a great character: he is kind & noble, though he doesn't always know what to do with Naomi. I loved how their relationship blossomed and stood the tests that life threw at them. They faced incredible hardship but did so together. The setting of the book was also fun as I've been to many of the places mentioned. The ending isn't a "happily ever after" but was fitting to their story just the same.
