Nick and Charlie
by Alice Oseman
While this novella was written & published before the Heartstopper graphic novels, it takes place ~2 years after them, acting as a bit of an extended epilogue of sorts--a little odd, since the graphic novels still have at least one more book coming out. The writing here definitely felt quite simple, like just a level above the graphic novels, which was fine, but not really as developed as I like in a novel, generally speaking. I liked seeing them deal with the very real issue of impending long-distance, and I thought the fight was frustratingly believable, but I wish we'd gotten to see a bit more of them together--we're told they have these great talks post-issue, but it's all off-screen. I was pleasantly surprised that this was more of a ~mature~ rating and that the fact that they have sex is openly mentioned. Which shouldn't feel as refreshing as it did, but it's nice to read a book about teens that is heartwarming and mushy and also talks about having sex and drinking and going to parties, etc. Fun, quick read for fans, but you'll get the most out of this if you've read the graphic novels (or at least watched the show, lol)
