A Christmas Carol: The Original Manuscript Edition by Charles Dickens

5.0

Easily my favourite Christmas story, be it in Muppet form, in the guise of Bill Murray or, dare I say, even in prose. Dickens gets away with things that we wouldn't allow these days (breathless exclamations! Demands that the reader refer cheerful people to him!), but he does it so charmingly, and with such economy of language, that you can't hold it against him.

This is a classic for a reason. Dickens apparently wrote several other Christmas stories, but this is the only one anyone gives a fig about. That's not to say none of the others are worthy, but it earned its place in my heart.

(And yes, like an idiot, I read it after the festive spirit wore off for the year; it was a Christmas present. This manuscript copy is pretty nice, artificially doubling the length of the book to give it some heft - with a foreword by Colm Toibin!)
