I haven’t read anything like this before and listening to the audiobook was the best recommendation I followed. Of course the content is challenging and you should check warnings before reading, but I thought the added element of magical realism with many of the women being wizards who had the power to perform miracles and lift the dark veil over their loved ones was so beautiful, terrible, and powerful. It felt like a great representation of the Black woman’s experience in the US.
