A Shade of Vampire by Bella Forrest
5.0
Ok so I loved this story. I think my only complaint is how it ended because I wanted to read more and also it was kind of short. She should have made it a novel instead of a short story. Besides that though it was great.
I love the atmosphere and world of the book. It's dark and yet not in a morbid, creepy way more in a gothic way. This book was very much a gothic romance and it gives Anne Rice a run for her money. The uncharted island where vampires can live freely was a great idea. I love that this book shows that just like in humans not all vampires are sociopaths but they aren't glittery fairies either. They each have their own personality.
I especially loved Derek. Derek is the 'Savior' of vampires who has been asleep for hundreds of years through the spell of a witch. Viviene his sister and his brother Lucas kidnap Sofia for when Derek wakes up. Derek is actually pretty naive to the world which is surprising for a 500 year old vampire but considering how long he's been asleep that not surprising. I love how much he truly cares about his human companions and slaves. He is sweet, loyal, and caring. He can also be deadly, brutal, and a little scary when protecting those he loves. I truly loved reading the parts from his point of view.
Sofia she is the person I wish I could be. She is kind, caring, strong, and she makes the best of any situation. I tries to help everyone even those she fears or doesn't know. That scene where she grabs the hands of the scared girl next to her even though they've never met just so that the other girl wouldn't be so scared was great. She also is the most thoughtful person ever. She is scary smart when it comes to people and their emotions. She can manipulate anyone to do anything and yet never uses that talent to harm, hurt, or for selfish reasons ever. She is truly an inspiring character and a perfect match for Derek.
I loved their relationship. I loved watching it grow from fear and hatred, to love and friendship.
Vivienne is also an awesome character. I love her spunkiness, her creativity, and her love for her brother Derek. Lucas on the other hand is a villain you just have to love to hate. He is cruel, malicious, selfish, and a total asshole but I still can't completely hate him.
I'd have to say the best part of this book was the characterization and I recommend it to those who like short vampire romances.
