If you love common YA tropes, King Arthur, Fantasy, Magic, and Representation you will love this book.

However, I expected more from this book due to the popularity of it but unfortunately, it just didn’t hit like I wanted it to. I found the YA romance tropes to be too strong and found that it took away from the overall story. From a non bias perspective it is a well-written book it just wasn’t for me.

Pros:
  1. The main character is really cool, she’s strong, independent, and goes through a lot of character development. She also provides good representation and a look inside what it’s like to be the only black person in a room full of white people. She also provides a look into micro aggressions and what it’s like to have to prove yourself just because of your skin color.
  2. The magic system is really interesting to read. Sometimes it’s a little confusing but it’s pretty unique and fun to read.
  3. Some of the side characters are really fun to watch our. Main character interact with.
  4. There is queer representation in some side characters!!!
Cons:
  1. Instant Love & Love Triangle tropes occur. I really don’t like these tropes because they are just so common in YA and I don’t feel like they add anything to the story. I just feel like these tropes are so common in books with straight main characters and as soon as they pop up the rating goes down significantly for me.
  2. Although it’s a book with lore based from King Arthur, I kind of wished more was explained about the enemy and why they have issues with Arthur. It might explain more in the sequel but honestly this book is just too YA for me to continue.
  3. The ages in this book are kind of strange because I think our main character hasn’t graduated HS yet but is simply in a pre college program which makes age gaps between her and Nick kind of confusing and strange.
