Black Swan Green by David Mitchell
5.0

Yes, this book has been compared to Catcher in the Rye, but, beyond the fact that both main characters are misfit adolescents, I don't see any comparison at all. I might compare this book in some ways to If Nobody Speaks of Remarkable Things, since both are British, both deal with protagonists that have some apparent "difference" about them, and both seem to move from moment to moment in a disconnected kind of way. The difference between those two books is that this one is so much more satisfying than Remarkable Things.
David Mitchell is a talented writer. This novel, unlike previous works of his that I have read (Cloud Atlas and Ghostwritten), is much more straightforward in scope and execution. The writing here, however, might be even better than the other two. Jason Taylor, Mitchell's youthful main character, is as real and sympathetic as any character Mitchell has created, and the "story" that Jason tells is as personal and recognizable as any in literature. The author does a wonderful job making it all seem fresh and true.
If you've read Remarkable Things and were disappointed, read this book! If you have been let down by Jodi Picoult's Sister's Keeper, read this book! Even if you haven't been disappointed by these selections, even if you've never read them, read this book!
