Artemis Made Me Do It by Trista Mateer

challenging dark emotional hopeful reflective tense fast-paced

4.5

Extremely honest and brutal yet so powerful and beautiful. This is how I would describe this ARC of Artemis Made Me Do It, which was given to me by Netgalley and Central Avenue Publishing.

“I refuse to make myself small enough
to fit into the cramped box
of your desire.”

As the title suggests, the poetry is heavily inspired by Artemis, the Greek goddess and twin sister of Apollo. However, I think - and it’s totally fair to correct me here - it’s also about people’s experience, especially those who identify or had identified as female before. Despite me being an enby, I still feel the fear, the pressure and all those emotions when I was raised as a girl. Things have happened. Things still happen and the anger which is also expressed in those poems how you have to keep shut, close your eyes— I felt it in the core of myself.
This book will shake you but honestly, it’s great. I liked being reminded how mighty you actually are.
