I was already impressed with the writing in Black Cake, and in this book Wilkerson upped her game even more. I appreciated this multigenerational story of both trauma and triumph, and agree that real-life stories like this are integral not only to the families that are the living result of them, but also the very history of this country. I will say that I was confused and thought that I had somehow missed what the inscription on the bottom of Old Mo was early on, but Wilkerson really just plays extremely coy with it till the very end.
