The Living Mountain by Nan Shepherd

Re-read this during a stay in the Cairngorms. It was wonderful! Every day something that we’d read the night before would resonate with what we experienced the following day. It’s a beautiful book that really conveys what the author observed and experiences of the Cairngorms landscape but without focusing on the observer.

I particularly like the chapter on water. “Like all profound mysteries, [water] is so simple that it frightens me. It wells from the rock, and it flows away. For unnumbered years it has welled from the rock, and flowed away. It does nothing, absolutely nothing, but be itself.”
