This is the CUTEST book.

For the past few years I've used it as part of our R.I.S.E. curriculum at my job. R.I.S.E stands for Reading Inspirational Stories to Empower. With the R.I.S.E. program we have volunteers go into elementary school classroom the week of MLK Jr's birthday and spend an hour with them. During that hour we read them a book that honors MLK Jr and his legacy. After reading it we discuss questions with them and then talk about change THEY wish to see in their own communities. After spending time talking about the change they wish to see, we write to our local council people who eventually come into the classroom to speak to the students about their letters.

This is one of the books we've used in the past and one that I have considered using every year because of its impact! It's a MUST READ, y'all and a great introduction to having them think about injustices in their own community and how we can all go about changing it/making it a better place to live.

Nikkolas Smith, the writer and illustrator, does a beautiful job of showing a young boys journey of blending his activism and artist skills. The young boy sets to change the world one painting at a time.

The art is truly powerful. It forces you to have conversations with your little/s about voting rights, homelessness, gun violence, being a trans ally, and more.
