Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad

2.0

As non-native speaker I found the novella difficult to read and not impressing.

The story itself starts interesting and I liked the way how Marlow experiences the influence of the dark continent on White men. Unfortunately not much is going on. The natives are treated in a cruel way, right, but it didn't upset me. There are many examples of such things in history, one only needs to look at the dictators from the 20th century and the horror of World War 1 and 2. The man with the gun dictates the rules, and this is what Kurtz is doing. Nobody is there to stop him and it's no surprise that he goes too far. Only the sick climate can stop the colonialists, and it does it very efficiently...
