Rescue by Alison Hendricks

This book is part of the current season of the Men of Hidden Creek series. I love this series and the hook…each book in the series each season is written by a different author. Season four has six books released between August 16, 2019-September 20, 2019. You get a common theme but with a different voice each time. Each book is an independent story so you don’t have to read the others in order to enjoy this one.

This third book in season four is such a heartwarming story. It centers on themes of after effects of abuse, how our past shapes our present and the masks we wear to cover our wounds. Ultimately it is a story of truth telling and redemption.

The MCs, Ty, a football player with a reputation that has earned him the nickname Beast, and Caleb, a PR person looking to start over by getting a contract that could help establish him independent of his former boyfriend and boss. When Ty, who wants no part of the process is impressed by what Caleb has to say in his interview he insists that his manager hire him. Of course initially Ty is a jerk full of inappropriate innuendos but Caleb resists him and sees something in Ty that others don’t see. He’s determined to get others to see it as well thus saving “The Beast’s” football career. This all comes together in the form of the dog rescue (hence the title) that Ty’s uncle is running.

The author does a great job of character development and gradually getting us to see everything behind both men’s current personas. The story arc moves well and when Ty and Caleb’s relationship eventually becomes physical the scenes between them are steamy. However, I was so drawn to the storyline about the dogs, the slimy PR guy and the dynamics of rescuing Ty’s reputation that I flew through those scenes to get to story I was so deeply into!

The crisis scene is heart breaking and you just want to reach into the pages to soothe the MCs. The resolution to the crisis happens a bit too quickly and mostly off page…too bad because I REALLY wanted to see some serious humiliation for the dirtbag!

The ending is sweet and I’m looking forward to what else this season has to offer. Each book stands alone but you will see people we’ve previously met in Hidden Creek pop up in subsequent stories.
