So enjoyable, I read this as a kid and remembered liking it and the movie. Upon reflection as an adult I realized it's about the prison industrial complex so gave it a reread and had the best time. Adventurous, with lovable characters and a true-to-life theme.

The book features children at a fictionalized, but still realistic, forced labor camp. So the content warnings should be heeded, just know it is aimed at a child audience so although the subjects are dark they are not covered in a heavy-handed or adult way.
