Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert
3.0
A poor man's Anna Karenina, Madame Bovary has all of the "woe is me" without any of the genuine poetry and love. You're left feeling she is a foolish child who is pulling off her own Don Quixote by thinking that you can have the things you read in books just by believing hard enough.
To her credit, the French countryside towns do sound dreadfully boring and she really did have too much time on her hands. Working class family with a nanny and a housekeeper and a cook and a stay at home wife? Staying at home doing what, exactly?
All three stars are for the quality of the writing.
