Second Helpings by Megan McCafferty
3.0

(AUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGH THIS IS THE THIRD TIME I'VE HAD TO TYPE THIS BECAUSE SOMEHOW I KEEP HITTING SOME KEY THAT MAKES IT GO TO A DIFFERENT PAGE WITHOUT SAVING!!!)

I liked this second book in the Jessica Darling series well enough, but over time Jessica is changing into someone I really do not enjoy. We all grow and mature and change our opinions on things over time, and sometimes this makes us act like hypocrites, but the changes Jessica is making are turning her into someone who, quite frankly, disgusts me.

Some of this happens in this book, and some of it goes on into the next book, which I flipped through while trying to decide whether to read it. I'm not going to. This is a major departure for me, as in the past I would feel COMPELLED to read the rest of the series since a) I'd started it, and b) I own the next book. But I'm trying to convince myself that life is too short to read unenjoyable books.

I did turn to the Internet to find out the rest of the story, and while I'm happy with what happens in the end, I really, REALLY don't want to subject myself to all the crap in between. UGH.

A couple of thoughts:

This is a really painful example of both "first world problems" and what I would consider "privileged white girl problems." I can totally see some people reading this and going OH WHO CARES, PRIVILEGED TEENAGER, WHICH IVY LEAGUE SCHOOL YOU DECIDE TO GRACE WITH YOUR PRESENCE???

The single MOST ANNOYING thing was the terrible job of proofreading. There were many instances of missing words or extra words, and this supposedly-Ivy-League-bound overachiever consistently used "pouring" instead of "poring," as in "I spent hours pouring over books in the library." Pouring what? Soda? If your character is so smart, make her come off that way.

(There was also one instance where "malled" was used as a verb instead of "mauled," but I don't know if that was a mistake as the "mauling" did in fact happen in a mall. She may have just been trying to be funny.)
