I kinda wish I had read this short story before reading the first book, it really is just a perfect little set-up for the series. Human fallibility meets with cultural intermixing meets with the hard realities of space, and comes out the other end with something like hope for the future in spite of it all. 

Perhaps because of that, it reads more like a prologue chapter to a book rather then its own story. But what a prologue chapter!
