The Shadow Rising by Robert Jordan
4.0

The shadow rising...the shadow rising. My most hated book in the previous read, I disliked everything about it, the events, the characters and the world building. I'm happy to say, not anymore.

to say this book was amazing is an understatement, the stretch of chapter 25 and 26 are some of the best lore chapters I've ever read. The way it all clicked into place, the Tinkers are actually Aiel, or at least the original Aiel were Tuath'an. The Da'Shin Aiel and the Age of Legends, Lanfaer and her folly, the ten thousand Aiel standing and singing for one of Lews Therin's companions (I think) while he was killing them because of his madness was absolute perfection. Everything was perfect!

Mat is still annoying sometimes with his constant complains but not too off-putting. The whole Perrin plotline was cool, the way he was turning the world around him was cool, but Faile was/is a constant groan whenever she is on screen. Rand's story was Rand's, nothing really to comment about. I like the Aiel.

Now, let me get to my biggest issue with this book and the reason it will not get a five stars. First of all, the start was slow, idc what anyone says, the first 16 or so chapters were unbearable and I LOVE politics. Second, Padan Fain, fain has become one of those power rangers Sunday villains who comes back after each defeat still as comically evil and as confident in his victory. He has lost the threat factor, when you show Rand fighting against Forsaken and changing whole landscapes then a madman who is so "evil" as to make a Myrddraal submit but CAN'T FUCKING CHANNEL isn't very threatening isn't he?
Third and final problem. Robert Jordan-may he rest well in his grave-can't write fucking romance! This man is a brilliant world builder, character maker and describtor, but a 13 year old wattpad fanfic author can write better romance than him. It is alright if it is not the focus of the story, but if you have 90% of a character's chapters...ahem ahem Perrin...be about romance then WRITE IT WELL!

Despite all of that, I give this book 4.5 stars. I'm excited to read: Fires of Heaven as I remember having as my second fav of the WoT books I've read at the time.
