The War of the Worlds by H.G. Wells
4.5

I’ve spent most of my life listening to the soundtrack to the original radio show from the 1920s in the car on long journeys, so it was finally nice to read the whole story. I say the whole story because we lost the second CD, so we only ever listened up to the end of Act 1, which ends with “The Earth belonged to the Martians”.

It’s such a great little tale. So concise as well (only about 220 pages) and somehow manages to say so much about humanity while still going into some great detail on the science..

I do think though that you get way more out of it if you have good knowledge about the geography of London (specifically south-west London, which is lucky for me). This is because Wells goes into such detail on the movement of the characters and the Martians that it helps to have a proper picture in your head of, for example, where Weybridge is in relation to Walton, and then Richmond, and Putney, and Wimbledon etc. Clapham Junction also gets a mention! I feel like those living outside London could maybe do with a map at the front of the book like fantasy stories have.

Anyway, it’s so good. Such a quick breezy read as well.
