The Fated Sky
by Mary Robinette Kowal
It’s not often that I read a novel in one go, but somehow I found it impossible to put this one down.
A lot of the issues I had with “the calculating stars” are solved here.
The women’s equal rights struggle is still predominant, but far less heavy handed and exaggerated and the race issue which has a significant place in the novel balances it out.
Our heroine is still annoyingly perfect, but she’s more human and sensitive towards others viewpoints and can acknowledge she might be wrong.
We finally se a 3 dimensional version of Parker.
Even though we know the conclusion to the story from the original novelette it’s still amazingly suspenseful and the interaction with the alternate timeline makes for captivating reading.
